TECHNICAL TOPIC 1 - Advanced Environmental ControlTechnologies for Coal(DE-PS26-05NT42317-01)The objective of this topic is to solicit Research and Development (R D)proposals having the potential to mitigate the environmental disadvantagesofcoal utilization through improvements in various aspects of the fuelcycle,from coal extraction and preparation through combustion-related wasteutilization or disposal. There is a need to significantly reduce airemissions, the volume of solid wastes, and /or water usage by improving theperformance of existing power plant control systems, such as coal cleaning,flue gas desulfurization (FGD), low NOx burners, selective catalyticreduction,or by developing new and innovative concepts.Coal is a solid fuel that contains components that can lead to theformation ofvarious gaseous and solid pollutants as well as deleterious solid wastes.Theseatmospheric pollutants include NOx, SO2, CO2 (a greenhouse gas),particulatematerials as well as hazardous trace elements such as mercury. High volumesofsolid wastes result from the disposal of coal ash and FGD sludge. Waterpollution can result from contamination during solid waste sluicingoperationsand thermal pollution from plant cooling requirements.
